Mohd Akhtar Ali, Hamid Uddin

Abstract

Abstract

Unani system of medicine can also be termed as Greco-Arabian or eastern medicine is a very affluent and prosperous system in context of literature in every department of medicine. The standard of treatment was maintained in every era, and for this purpose the physicians compiled their experiences in the form of Qarābādhīn, Kūnnāsh, and Bayaz. Qarābādhīn can be termed as pharmacopoeia is a compiled form of compound formulations or recipes.  Importance of Qarābādhīn gradually increased and acquired an imperative status. The history of Qarābādhīn starts from Chiron, Aesculapius, Hippocrates, Dioscorides and Galen in Greek era. The Arabs play vital role and immense original contribution in this discipline. Many of Arab physicians authored important and essential Qarābādhīn with systemic and scientific approaches; some of them do not exist now days; many are preserved as manuscripts in libraries across the world and some are published and available in the contemporary era. The Arab Caliphates appreciate and patronize the fields of medicine acquired from Greek and work for its development that become popular as a “Greeco-Arab Medicine”. In this work the evaluation of Qarābādhīn was done in historical and regulatory perspective particularly in Greek era and later on in Arabian era. In conclusion the findings of the review indicate the importance and regulatory status of Qarābādhīn in Greco-Arab era and provide information’s about it. It can help to explore Qarābādhīn and related publications of Greeco-Arabian period; which gives foundations for the present day pharmacopeia. Its utility in medical field for ensuring quality and safety of the medicinal formulation cannot be forbidden; these documents thereby provided the initial ethical considerations to the field of medicine.
